Ultimate Guide to Applying to the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD)

Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) is a leading institution in the region for technology and design education and research, aiming to nurture technically-grounded leaders and innovators to serve societal needs, with design being the focal point. SUTD utilised an “integrated multi-disciplinary curriculum and multi-disciplinary research”. This guide will summarise how you can apply to SUTD in the current and upcoming application cycles.


Application Process


SUTD only accepts applications made via their own SUTD Admissions System


Applicants are to submit only one online application form during the application period. There is no hard-copy application form. Application windows vary for each category of students, divided according to the type of pre-university qualifications, similar to other Singapore public universities like NUS and SMU.




For the academic year 2022/23, application windows begin on the 3rd of January 2022 for students with both local and international qualifications. However, application windows for students with local qualifications such as A-Level, Polytechnic Diploma, and International Baccalaureate Diploma (IBDP) will close on March 19th. In contrast, students with international qualifications have till March 12th to submit their applications. Shortlisted candidates would be notified (latest by April) to select either an in-person or online interview timeslot.


Students may find the complete application pre-requisites on the university website. Below is a reference provided by SUTD to help prospective applicants - of the A-Level students receiving an offer:

  • Nearly all had taken Mathematics at H2 level, and 80% scores a B and above

  • Almost all had taken either Physics or Chemistry (or both) at H2 level

  • Nearly 7 in 10 of those who took either H2 Physics, H2 Chemistry, or both scored at least a B for either subject.

  • Personal Particulars

Fill out your personal details including your full name, nationality, and supporting documents such as NRIC

  • Contact Information

Provide a valid email address and a contact number

  • Academic Qualification

Provide information regarding your academic grades, such as your transcripts.

  • Supplementary Results

Input any noteworthy test scores, such as your SATs, ACTs or English proficiency results

  • Personal Insight Questions

Choose two out of four questions and provide a response. This section allows applicants to demonstrate their personalities which will be helpful in the application.

  • Testimonial

Up to two referees are allowed. Your referee(s) should already know you well academically (e.g. your teacher from High School/Polytechnic) or professionally (your internship or work supervisor) and for at least half a year recently.


Do seek your referee(s)’ consent before listing them.

  • Outstanding/ Relevant Achievements

List down some notable experiences outside of the classrooms such as leadership involvement, entrepreneurship journey, internship, etc. You are encouraged to provide any additional URLs to your online portfolio and/or YouTube channel.


  • Scholarship

Indicate if you wish to apply for scholarships administered by SUTD (inclusive of donor-sponsored scholarships) and answer two out of three questions to support your scholarship application. Do remember to declare your monthly per capita income if you are applying for scholarships.


  • Special Programmes (optional)

Awaiting the Outcome

Shortlisted applicants who make it to the next round will be interviewed. Applicants will be notified to select an interview slot, latest by April. The interview is designed for the professors to understand applicants’ personalities; thus, candidates are advised to stay relaxed and engage in a dialogue. There may be some technical questions pertaining to the applicant's course of interest.
